My Day as a Second Shooter/Assistant, Part 1...Aug. 30, 2014 - Attanasio Imagery

Recently I had an opportunity to help my friend (Dave Gardiner)with a model shoot over at the beach in Sandy Hook. He needed someone to move equipment and adjust lighting in three different locations around Fort Hancock. Although set-up started at 5am, I volunteered my services figuring I'll help out a good friend and learn something in the process. I'm glad I did!

I'll give a brief back-story on the day with a few second shooter photos to help you visualize the proceedings. Hopefully my post today gives you a few tips on location, lighting, posing and processing. Here we go......

The gates open at Sandy Hook at 5am and at this time of the year that gave us about an hour to set up the equipment before sunrise. I met Dave in the parking lot and we gathered the equipment and walked down to the beach. Luckily it was a perfect morning for the shoot, cool temps and very little wind.

Equipment included...

Dave's: Nikon D7000 with Nikon 24-70, 2.8 and Nikon 70-200, 2.8 lenses. Apollo Orb softbox with two Nikon flashes, remote wireless transmitters/triggers, Manfrotto light stand, 4 sand bags and silver/gold reflector.

Mine: Canon 5D MkII with Canon 17-40, 4.0 and Canon 70-200, 4.0L's and a Manfrotto tripod.

The set-up looked something like this....relatively simple....

As we waited for the model Dave took a few test shots making sure all equipment was in working order and adjusted settings accordingly. All equipment worked fine, the test model on the other hand??????

Jasmine finally arrived and we quickly got started as the sun was ascending over the horizon. After a few shots we determined that we could move more quickly if I held the softbox to make more efficient adjustments for direction of the light. Luckily the equipment isn't too heavy. After a few dozen shots we took a break and I grabbed my camera. I was able to grab a few decent shots.... click on to see larger version...

Dave switched out lenses and I adjusted the lighting and we resumed shooting. I didn't have to man the softbox at this point so I grabbed my camera and took a few more before we moved to our next location.... click for larger version

And my favorite from the first location.... Stay tuned for part 2 of my day!
